MAINTENANCE
The maintenance and protection of natural stone depends on its composition (limestone, hard granite), its use (fireplace, worktop, paving) and its exposure (interior, exterior).
Therefore each application has a specific protection and maintenance method. As a general rule, for decorative chimneys, paving and other products in limestone like Pierre de France, a neutral soap like Marseilles soap in flakes diluted in water at proportions of 30cm³ (handful) for 10 litres of water. Too much soap will form an unappealing skin on the surface of the stone.
For other limestone like Blue Stone, a soap based on linseed oil diluted in water.
For kitchen worktops in Belgian or Irish Blue Stone, just after fitting and when the worktop is clean, it is advisable to coat them with a solution composed of 2/3 thinner and 1/3 linseed oil. This method will protect against staining (should be repeated twice a year).
For polished stone fireplaces (marble or granite) maintenance should be carried out with pure water, possibly with the addition of a neutral soap. The shine should be maintained with natural beeswax and a cotton cloth.
For worktops in hard granite: the worktop should be made water-repellent by a product which does not change the colour of the stone.
Special products for stone and marble are available for sale. They give good results as long as you respect the manufacturer's instructions and avoid using too much.
