The correct heating device
Heating your home intelligently starts with an appropriate fireplace or stove. An open fire gives a lot of atmosphere but not much heat. A moulding (cassette open fire) gives a lot more output and a modern wood stove gives an output of 90%. The capacity of the stove must be adapted to the room to be heated. An insufficient capacity implies a lack of heat. A too great capacity means that the stove is functioning at half of its power. And this is bad for the combustion process.
The correct capacity
As regards output, the adaptation of the capacity of your fireplace or stove to the heating requirements of the room concerned is fundamental information. If this capacity is too great, your room will be overheated and your will be tempted to make your stove work at a low capacity. This harms the optimal combustion of your heating device as the latter is only if your stove is functioning at full capacity.
Output
The output of open fireplaces is about 20 %. It doesn't matter whether it is an open gas or wood fire. Wood stoves and gas stoves as well as closed built-in fireplaces reach an output of over 90% at times. This great difference is explained by the fact that in the case of an open fire, there is not really a way of influencing the process of combustion while in a fireplace or a closed stove, the conditions of combustion can be adjusted optimally.
Radiant heating and convection
A fireplace or stove can heat in two ways: by radiant heating or convection. Radiant heating means that you are heated directly by the heat of the fire. This is only possible if there are no obstacles. Open fireplaces, stoves with large windows and heating devices with doors or closed enable this type of heating. Radiant heating is very comfortable. This is why it creates such a lovely atmosphere in your home.
In the case of convection, heating is done by the intermediary of air heated by the device. Since hot air tends to rise, it therefore produces a circulation of air in your room which efficiently heats all of your room in a very short time. Wood or modern gas stoves often have large panoramic windows in their doors so that you can see the fire. With gas devices, in contrast to wood stoves, you cannot open the doors. In this case, the heat is produced by radiant heating as well as by convection.
